The Biomedical applications group from IMP focus its research on developing planar microwave sensors arrays for analysis and treatment in biomedical applications. All studied sensors have in common that they transduce the dielectric properties of materials under test (MUT) in their direct vicinity into an electric signal. From the evaluation of the signal, vital information about the MUT (cells or tissues) can be obtained and furthermore the same signal can be used for therapeutic treatment of the sample. In the past work, we have investigated the capabilities of these type of sensors and have done extensive proof-of-concept demonstrations in a wide range of application scenarios in the biology and medicine field, ranging from cytological studies in a microfluidic lab-on-chip environment to cancer detection and treatment in tissues. In Fig 1 you can see some examples of the previously fabricated prototypes.

In every case, the thesis work will include a literature research on the specific topic, simulation work with state of the art software and a practical part where the designed prototype will be fabricated and measured to prove the concept and therefore give the student a comprehensive view of this research field.
