THz applications & new materials

  1. Having both efficient sources and detectors at hand, we also focus on THz applications. Of particular interest are spectroscopic applications, in particular gases, organic compounds and semiconductors. Recent work includes the study of resolution limits of Terahertz time domain systems at the example of oil and gasoline spectroscopy as well as their mixtures and aged/oxidized oils.
  1. Our capabilities and available laser systems are used for studying and new materials for THz devices and applications. This includes, e.g., spintronic materials and perovskites.

Project responsible: Sascha Preu
Team members:
  • Stefan Regensburger (post doc) investigated strontium-molybdate-based perovskites in terms of their THz conductivity.
  • Mario Mendez Aller (PhD student) studied the absorption coefficient and refractive indices of a variety of oils and oil-gasoline mixtures before he switched to the project Pho-T-Lyze.
Further Bachelor and Master students support the project (past and ongoing):
  • Mohammed Sayed Abdel Aziz (Master student, spintronic devices)
  • Arslan Khawaja (master student, perovskites)
Collaboration partners:
  • Dennis Watson, Southern Illinois University, USA: gasoline and its contaminants
  • Duu Sheng Ong, Multimedia University, Malysia: palm oils
  • Tobias Kampfrath, FU Berlin: Spintronics
  • Gerhard Jakob, Matthias Kläui, Johannes Guttenberg University, Mainz: Spintronics
